Students investigate the potential of Dutch pig farming based on available residual flows
At the moment, almost 18 million pigs are kept for meat in the Netherlands each year. Students from HAS investigated whether this is in line with the available amount of residual flows and by-products from our current food system. By comparing the ration needs of a pig with the available and legally permitted residual flows from, among other things, the food industry and household use, they discovered great potential.
More residual flows available than pigs to feed
''In the event that the current pig ration is replaced by only residual flows, 36,313,268 fattening pigs can be fed with the current legislation and regulations based on this research. This means that twice as many fattening pigs can be fed with the available residual flows in the Netherlands, an increase of 99%.
