In June 2024, trade association Nevedi launched the Sustainable Animal Feed Monitor, which they developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant chain partners. The goal: to provide insight into how animal feed contributes to making the food chain more sustainable. In the monitor, they focus on four sustainability themes: climate, biodiversity, circularity and European origin, each with its own KPIs.

Nevedi director Henk Flipsen: “With the Monitor we know better than ever what we are actually talking about: when it comes to further sustainability, we assume 'measuring is knowing' and we increasingly speak the same language within and outside the sectors”.

Nevedi and the chain parties will consider implementing the monitor in the sustainability agenda of the various sectors after the summer. Flipsen: ''The low-hanging fruit has now been picked. Acceleration in more sustainable animal feed when it comes to climate and circularity, for example, must really come from innovations such as new residual flows.'' And that is exactly what the members of VIDO emphasise. The first KPI has been set as the objective of increasing the percentage of residual and by-products and former foodstuffs in animal feed.
